Another Week, Another Win

LSU vs. Mississippi State Highlights

Unlike two other SEC opponents, the LSU Tigers avioded an upset, beating Mississippi State 34-24. However, Florida and Georgia weren’t so lucky. Florida was upset by Ole Miss and Georgia was upset by Alabama.

Charles Scott rushed 27 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Jarrett Lee passed for two touchdowns. Andrew Hatch did not play.  Brandon LaFell was the Tigers’ leading receiver with seven catches for 100 yards. He was on his way to scoring a touchdown, but fumbled at the 1 yard line and tight end Richard Dixon recovered the ball and received credit for the touchdown.

The upsets of Florida, Georgia, and also USC (who was beat by Oregon State) helped to move the Tigers up in the rankings. In the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Tigers jumped up to #2, in the Associated Press poll, the Tigers were ranked at #3 (see polls below).

Jarrett Lee was named the SEC Freshman of the Week.

LSU meets Florida next Saturday in Gainesville.

LSU vs. Auburn Highlights

LSU vs. Auburn Pregame Hype Video

LSU Wins The Tiger Bowl

Last year, it came to this, Matt Flynn threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Byrd (above) to overcome Auburn, 30-24 as time expired (see video below). This time, it was another fourth quarter touchdown pass but it wasn’t as much of a nailbiter as last year’s touchdown was and it wasn’t thrown by Matt Flynn and Demetrius Byrd didn’t catch it.

Redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee threw an 18 yard touchdown pass to Brandon LaFell with 1:03 remaining in the fourth quarter. The play turned out to be the last score of the game as Auburn was two yards short on their attempted fourth down conversion. Lee kneeled and the game ended shortly thereafter.

The Tigers’ other quarterback, Andrew Hatch, was clocked on a quarterback running play and didn’t return to the game.

Lee completed 11 of 22 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an interception which was returned for a touchdown by Auburn.

Charles Scott showed Head Coach Les Miles more reasons of why he should be the starting running back by rushing 21 times for 132 yards.

Chad Jones returned most of the punts throughout the game after Trindon Holliday dropped two consecutive punts.

LSU was considered to be the favorite in the game, but many college football experts were picking Auburn to win because of LSU’s quarterback situation. As for that, Lee certainly had the big plays at the right times tonight, but he wasn’t very consistant. I would’ve rather had Ryan Perriloux under center, but you can’t have everything good. As for now, I’m just happy that the Bayou Bengals picked up a victory tonight and in Auburn of all places.

The Tiger Bowl

Its time for The Tiger Bowl, LSU at Auburn. If Auburn wins the game, it will be considered an upset, not a big one, but an upset because LSU is ranked #6 and Auburn is ranked #10. In their last game, Auburn beat Mississippi State in a pitchers duel, 3-2. LSU beat North Texas 41-3 in their last game. Auburn seems to be a popular pick by many college football experts and talk show hosts because they are considered to be the better team and. Both teams will probably be using two quarterbacks in the game. Last year, LSU beat Auburn in a close one. Matt Flynn threw a touchdown to wide receiver Demetrius Byrd as time expired to secure the win. LSU was expected to kick a field goal to send the game into overtime but they went for 6 instead. This game will be telivised nationally on ESPN. The game will start around 7:15 CDT.

In unrelated news, I will leaving on September 22 and will be back around October 8. I might be able to write a blog post or two but its unlikely. I’m thinking of making a few videos about the Tigers and posting them here. Until then…

Time For Auburn

Its time to play Auburn, their offense wasn’t very impressive last week, but Auburn fans insist that Tommy Tuberville was holding the offense back in anticipation of the game against the Tigers in Auburn. They beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs with a score of 3-2, more of a baseball score than a football score but a win is a win no matter how ugly it is, at least it is to me.

If LSU can make a few good plays on both sides of the ball and beat the officials, who always seem to make a bad call against LSU, then we should be able to win the game (see video). LSU doesn’t seem to be a popular pick to win the SEC and make a repeat of last year’s championship season, Georgia with Moreno and Florida with Mr. Heisman, Tim Tebow himself seem to be more of a popular pick. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against Tebow or Moreno, as long as they let the Tigers beat them, I’m fine with it but what do I know? Make sure to look for the game recap here on Tigers Town after the game. Until next time…

LSU Moves Up One In Rankings Polls

The LSU Tigers moved up from #7 to #6 in both of the national polls, the Associated Press poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll on Sunday. The move comes the day after the Tigers beat the North Texas Mean Green 41-3 in Baton Rouge, Saturday night.
The Tigers face Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, Saturday evening which is 9 and 10 in the polls respectively.

It’s Another Win!!!

The Tigers have won again, but of course everyone expected them to. They beat the North Texas Mean Green 41-3. The next game that they will play will be more of a challenge, next week they will head to Alabama to face the Auburn Tigers.
The Tigers’ passing game struggled all night with Andrew Hatch throwing an interception in the first half but the running game was excellent.
Hatch was 10 of 18 for 84 yards and ran for a 7 yard touchdown. Jarrett Lee also played. Head Coach Les Miles expects both quarterbacks to also play against Auburn next week.
The little guy accounted for the big play, Trindon Holliday returned a punt for 92 yards for the score, tying a second longest return in LSU history.
The Tigers’ amassed 425 yards while holding the Mean Green to 199.

Are You Ready, Tigers Fans?

Its time to play football. Tonight at 7PM, the Tigers will host the North Texas Mean Green in Baton Rouge. LSU is 3-0 all time against North Texas usually at least with a score above 40 while holding the Mean Green to under 15.
The Tigers will continue to divide snaps between Andrew Hatch and Jarrett Lee as neither one of them has jumped out ahead of the other in the starting quarterback battle.
North Texas is coming off a 450-yard offensive output against Tulsa last week as quarterback Giovanni Vizza connected on 30 of 45 passes for 247 yards but that impressive offense is expected to be stopped cold by the Bayou Bengals. The Tigers are coming off of 41-13 win over Appalachian State, which was their season opener.
Their second game was delayed until November 15 because of damage to Tigers Stadium from Hurricane Gustav and the looming of Hurricane Ike but Ike made landfall in Texas early this morning so the game is a go.

The Tigers have won 26 games straight at night in Tigers Stadium and they sure aren’t ready to break that streak right now. The game is expected to be emotional as parts of Louisiana suffered major damage from Gustav and Ike but hopefully all of that will be forgotten when the boys in Purple and Gold take the field.

Ike Can’t Keep The Tigers Out Of Death Valley

Ike couldn’t keep LSU away from Tigers Stadium and no, we’re not talking about the former President of the United States. Today, LSU Director of Athletics Joe Alleva announced that the game against North Texas will be played at 7 PM, Saturday night so it looks as if North Texas will get the Saturday night Death Valley treatement that Troy escaped (for now).

We’ve been hearing a lot from Alleva lately concerning scheduling issues because of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Gustav caused the season opener against Appalachian State to be moved up a few hours (LSU won that game, 41-13) and caused the second game of the season, against Troy, to be postponed until November 15th because of damage that Tigers Stadium suffered from Gustav.

Alleva encourages fans to drive safely to and from the game because of hurricane debris still remaining from Gustav and to also make sure that their hotel reservations are still intact as Governor Bobby Jondal issued an executive order to make lodging availible to utility workers who are staying in the area to bring Louisiana utilities back up to 100%.
